The Detroit Festival of Books, aka: Detroit Bookfest, is a FREE annual in-person event at the historic Eastern Market in Detroit, Michigan. It is the largest book festival in the state of Michigan. Detroit Bookfest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Over 300+ vendors from all over the USA & Canada are selling books (and other items including vinyl records, comic books, creative arts, and more) at Bookfest. We anticipate up to 20,000 attendees from all over the USA, Canada, and other countries this year. Activities include: hands-on projects for children, DJ playing funk music, variety of street performers, concert ticket giveaways, all sorts of different pop-ups and more.   The interactive Vendor Directory and Bookfest 2026 Map of Vendors was created by Detroit’s own computer whiz, Sean Snyder.

This event is part of a larger scope project called “Book-cation Weekend” featuring a self-driving regional tour of over 75+ bookstores on Saturday, and our main event, Detroit Bookfest, on Sunday. And don’t forget to join us on Sunday for the Official Bookfest Afterparty from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Detroit City Distillery on Riopelle Street. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate.

If you have any further questions as an attendee, please Contact Us.

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you!

Event Details / FAQ

Attendance / entry to the festival as an attendee is FREE and open to the general public.

Loose, comfortable, breathable clothing is strongly recommended. Bookfest is usually a hot, humid, and sunny day.

  • The highest we’ve seen at the peak of the day is 89 degrees.
  • Please check the weather and dress accordingly.
    • Bring an umbrella or rain gear if rain is forecasted.
    • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats if sunny weather is forecasted.

Wear a pair of good, comfortable walking shoes. You’ll be walking quite a bit…

Eastern Market hosts events which attract 75,000+ people, thus, parking is certainly available. Parking in the Eastern Market District is plentiful but scattered, which includes a variety of free and metered street parking, free and for-pay parking lots, and the Eastern Market parking garage.

  • Come prepared and wear comfortable shoes, should you need to park more remotely.
  • Many folks also use ride sharing services to avoid the hassle of parking.

Metered street parking is FREE on Sundays in the City of Detroit, but please park legally so as not to block pedestrian crosswalks, driveways, gates, or fire hydrants. Tickets are issued on Sundays for illegally-parked vehicles.

Parking lots and garages are colored blue on the Vendor Map. Please refer to the Detroit Bookfest 2026 Vendor Map online for additional detail.

Detroit Bookfest is an all-ages, family-friendly event. The love of books can start at any age, so parents, bring your family and always remember to keep an eye on your children.

There will be several children’s activities going on in the Community Activities area outside Shed 5 (DTE Plaza), and many more Children’s Books vendors scattered throughout the festival.

We partner with Birdie’s Bookmobile for book donation drive. If you have any GENTLY USED kids books to donate, please bring them!

Parents should be aware that some vendors may sell materials that are decidedly NOT appropriate for children. While vendors have been advised to use appropriate discretion with explicit materials, compliance is not guaranteed.

There is a Flagstar Bank ATM embedded into the northwest exterior wall of Shed 5.

There is also a Chase ATM across the street outside of Chase Bank (Russell Street @ Wilkins Street).

Every vendor sets their own in terms for cash flow, providing change, and accepting credit card or electronic payments

      • There is no centralized market bank. Bookfest organizers cannot make change for large bills.
      • Please help the vendors out by bringing CASH and small bills, if you can. $1’s, $5’s, $10’s WILL be needed.
      • Many vendors DO have the ability to accept credit card payments via their smartphones; however, this is not a guarantee.

There are numerous bathrooms located around Eastern Market. They are colored blue on the Vendor Map.

There are wheelchair-accessible bathrooms inside Shed 5 and Shed 3 and the Annex (south of Wilkins, between Russell and Riopelle), but not at the Wheelhouse (Russell at Division Street).

Please refer to the Detroit Bookfest 2026 Vendor Map online for exact locations.

At the time of this printing, we DO NOT have portable toilets facilities ordered for the event. Restroom lines, particularly the women’s restroom in Shed 5, do occasionally get long.  Please plan accordingly.

      Porta-Potty Sponsorship Opportunity

It’s not AT ALL glamorous, but I can guarantee you’d have the eternal gratitude of Bookfest Vendors & Attendees if you’d be willing to Sponsor Detroit Bookfest for purposes of funding additional temporary restroom facilities.

We usually reserve “Area Naming Rights” for our Bestseller sponsorship tier ($7,500 / year), but we will be pleased to acknowledge “Additional Restroom Facilities Sponsored by YOUR COMPANY” at the Acclaimed Author tier ($4,000 / year) or above.

Interested?  Email sponsor@detroitbookfest.com or fill out the Sponsorship Interest Form.

Yes, there will be a variety of vendors selling food from their mobile kitchens and trucks.

Please filter for Food in our Vendor Directory for details of this year’s food offerings.

YES! DJ Seven Whales will be bringing the heat in the form of Detroit-tastic funk music inside Shed 5.

Outside of Shed 5, on Alfred Street, Detroit street drummer Deon Forrest, will be wowing the crowds with his amazing skills.

Eastern Market Corporation may have a DJ located in Shed 2.

Yes, there is free Wi-Fi (wireless internet) at Eastern Market.

      • A password is not needed for the general public to access to Public/Guest Wi-Fi.
      • A separate “Vendor-Only” Wi-Fi network is provided to facilitate vendor transaction/payment processes. The Vendor Wi-Fi Password changes quarterly.

We are a tiny 501c3 non-profit organization staffed by volunteers. We all have day jobs. We organize Bookfest for the community in our spare time.

This is a large (and rapidly growing) event and things don’t always go 100% according to plan. Thank you for your patience and support.

The Detroit Festival of Books is the largest book festival in the State of Michigan. We have vendors from all over the USA, Canada, and other countries. It is a goodwill effort to help generate a deeper love and appreciation of books. This event is indoor/outdoor, cold/warm, rain/shine.

Vendors keep 100% of their proceeds.

Although active since the 1840’s-50’s, the current configuration of Eastern Market has existed since 1891. Stretching over 40 acres, it is one of the largest and oldest historic public markets in the USA. And yes, it is built on top of where the old Russell Street Cemetery was located.

Eastern Market is comprised of a series of indoor and outdoor sheds which function as consumer markets that currently average 40,000 weekly visitors with an additional 45,000 people on Saturday’s alone.

By 2030, Eastern Market will be 5x’s times bigger! They are expanding from 43-acres to 250-acres.

Detroit Bookfest does not currently have a partner hotel, nor have we booked a block of rooms at a discounted rate for 2026, but we are considering this for future years. Please express any interest you may have by filling out our Attendee Survey.

Fortunately, the entire Metro Detroit area offers some great hotels and Airbnb’s. Here are some examples. Please do your own research.
