We are aware of a variety of concerns related to current (7/17/2026) Air Quality Index (AQI) measurements. We’ve always said, “Detroit Bookfest happens, Rain or Shine!” Apparently, we need to add “Smoke” to that list…
Detroit Bookfest is proceeding as planned on Sun July, 19, 2026.
Hopefully, weather forecasts will continue to indicate a shifting of the winds which should offer relief from current smokey conditions by Sunday.
Additionally, for ALL:
- We only cancel if ordered to do so by Eastern Market corporation and/or government entities for safety reasons (Thunderstorm / Tornado warning, etc.); and we cannot offer refunds should that occur.
- We always advise Attendees, Vendors, and Volunteers to “Dress appropriately for the weather.” In this case, “dressing appropriately” for the weather may mean digging out those N95 masks you stashed away around 2022 when the COVID epidemic abated.
- We do not have a fully-enclosed, air-sealed environment option for ANY festival areas.
Additionally, for VENDORS:
- For Air Quality purposes, there would be no differentiation between outdoor, semi-outdoor (Shed 2, 4, 6), and “indoor” (Shed 5). Shed 5 will need to be at least partially open for ventilation; none of the sheds are air conditioned.
- Vendors should refer to the Weather section (p14) of the Official 2026 Vendor Guide for general guidance. As noted, Bookfest happens Rain or Shine, or Smog for that matter.
- If, as a Vendor, you choose not to participate due to forecasted weather (rain, or smoke/smog, or blizzard for that matter) without the event itself being ordered to cancel/close, that is YOUR choice; we cannot offer refunds in that scenario.
Thanks, and we’re looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!
DBF Team
